I had followed a search result to a mature-tagged discussion about medication side effects. I wanted to read it before an appointment the next morning. Instead of the post, Reddit offered two ways forward: estimate my age from a selfie or photograph a government ID.
My first thought was that the hotel Wi-Fi was causing the problem. My second was that turning on a VPN would make the verification private.
I connected to a familiar provider and returned to the page. The VPN icon appeared at the top of my screen, but the camera was still pointed at my face.
That was when I realised I had been asking the wrong question. The issue was not simply whether a VPN could protect the verification process. It was whether I needed to begin that process at all.
The short answer

The change extended beyond dedicated adult sites. Mature content on platforms such as Reddit could also trigger a check. Reddit may use signals already associated with an account or ask the user to provide an age range, selfie or identity document through a verification partner.
VPN downloads rose sharply as these gates appeared. The increase was often described as a rush to bypass adult-site restrictions, but that explanation missed an important part of the reaction. Many adults were less concerned about proving that they were over 18 than about connecting a legal page view to a face, passport or driving licence.
Public discussions reflected the same hesitation. Users asked why reading a legal post required another company to process identity information, and some were surprised that activating a VPN did not make the verification prompt itself private.
Their confusion was understandable. A VPN can hide the user’s normal IP address and prevent a hotel, workplace or internet provider from easily seeing the destination of the connection. It does not conceal information deliberately submitted after the page opens.
If I pressed the selfie button, the verification provider would still receive my face. If I chose the document option, it would still receive the requested document. The VPN would protect the route used to send that information, but it would not remove the information from the transaction.
That difference sounds obvious once stated. It was less obvious with a camera preview already open and a reassuring VPN icon glowing above it.

Reddit says that it does not receive the photographs used in its Persona verification flow and instead receives the age result. Persona says images and personal information used for Reddit’s process are deleted within three days and are not sold or used to train AI systems.
Those protections are relevant. They did not remove the decision in front of me.
Uploading an image under a short retention policy is still different from not uploading it. A private route can reduce what surrounding networks and destination sites learn from an IP address, but it cannot make a face or identity document non-identifying.
The same applies to the account itself. A platform may associate the completed age result with the profile that requested access. Changing the connection afterward does not necessarily erase that account state.
So I backed out of the camera and tried to solve the earlier problem: reaching the page without creating a new identity exchange.
The Familiar Provider Left the Decision Untouched
I was already connected to a large, established VPN, so I changed to a server outside the UK and refreshed.
The verification screen remained.
That first result was useful. I had opened the page while signed into an account already selected for an age check. A new IP address had not undone the platform’s decision about that account.
I signed out and opened a private window. This time, the verification prompt disappeared from the public page.
For a moment, that looked like success. Then a traffic challenge appeared. I completed the CAPTCHA and received another. The next refresh ended in a generic access error.

Instead of working through a long server list, I chose the preset for reaching a restricted page and connected. Then I opened a fresh private window and pasted the original link.
The discussion appeared.
There was no camera prompt, document request or verification callback. The post loaded normally. I found the section about the medication, followed its source and wrote down the questions I wanted to ask at the appointment.
The result came first. The technical explanation only needed to account for what I had just seen.
The service uses HTTP/3-based transport with additional traffic obfuscation. In practice, it produced a usable route where the larger provider had led to repeated challenges. More importantly, it allowed me to reach the page without beginning the identity-verification transaction.
That was the privacy improvement I had actually been looking for.
I did not upload my face. I did not photograph an identity document. I did not create another standard account before connecting. The page simply loaded.
After reading the discussion, I opened one of its external references. A blocked-request counter began to rise as the app filtered unnecessary tracking requests in the background. That was not what solved the age gate, but it addressed the next, smaller concern: once I had avoided the identity check, I also wanted fewer third parties following the rest of the browsing session.
The service has a shorter public history and fewer independent reviews than the established provider I tried first. For this task, however, the longer track record did not change the outcome on the screen. One service protected a route that still ended in a verification choice or traffic challenge. The other let me finish what I had opened the browser to do.

When verification is unavoidable, users still need to consider what information is requested, who processes it, what result is returned to the platform and how long the original material is retained.
My situation allowed a better outcome. I did not need a platform to certify my identity. I needed to read a legal, publicly accessible discussion without adding my face or document to the journey.
The established provider protected my original IP address but left me facing the same identity decision—or a page that would not load. The smaller app reduced identity collection before the session began and then provided a route that completed the task.
