I was at home in Atlanta, trying to reopen a video my partner had sent earlier that evening. The site displayed the same regional notice I had seen before connecting the VPN.
I assumed the server switch had failed.
I disconnected, selected New Jersey, and reconnected. The badge changed, and an independent IP page showed a new address outside Georgia.
Pornhub did not care.
I refreshed the tab. Then I closed it and reopened the link from my browser history. The same notice returned before the rest of the page could load.
My next choice was Washington, D.C.
Same result.
By then, I was no longer asking whether the VPN had changed my IP. The IP checker said it had. I wanted to know why Pornhub continued responding as though nothing had changed.
The short answer

The dispute continued into 2026, while interest in VPNs rose among adults trying to understand why access changed at state borders.
That explained why switching servers seemed like the obvious fix: connect through another state, reload, and continue.
It also explained why my first few seconds on the site mattered.
Pornhub had opened while my normal Georgia connection was still active. Before I selected New York, the site had already seen the apartment’s broadband address and decided which regional page to show.

A new IP did not erase the old session

Websites can remember more than the address used for the latest request.
Once a site makes an initial location decision, it can preserve information about the visit in cookies, browser storage, or a server-side session. Pornhub’s published privacy materials describe its use of cookies, and independent reporting has documented information stored in the browser even when a visitor is not signed in.
The practical meaning was simple: switching the VPN beneath an already-open tab did not necessarily erase the state assigned when the tab first loaded.
The session had begun in Georgia.
Refreshing it was not the same as arriving for the first time from New York.
Public discussions show the same mistaken assumption in a sentence or two: users change a VPN location, press refresh, and expect an immediate reset. When that fails, they often keep switching servers even though the old browser session is still being reused.
I had already tried three cities. What I had not tried was one clean arrival.
The browser had another way to know where I was
Before clearing the session, I checked the browser’s permissions.
Location access was still enabled.

IP geolocation services build their own maps of network addresses. Those maps are updated at different times, and VPN infrastructure makes disagreement more visible because an address can be reassigned or used somewhere different from its older record.
A server labelled New York in a VPN app can therefore appear elsewhere to the database used by a website.
The established provider still had real strengths. It had years of public history, extensive documentation, a large support operation, and many U.S. locations.
But the long list was becoming a list of guesses.
I tried Pennsylvania, then Illinois. One exit brought back the Georgia notice. Another produced the generic regional error. A third loaded the front page but failed when I opened the video.
The server name kept changing.
The outcome did not.
I was changing one part of a four-part problem
By then, each attempt contained too many moving pieces:
- the old tab could retain the first regional decision;
- browser storage could preserve the previous visit;
- device-location permission existed separately from the IP address;
- and different location databases could classify the VPN exit differently.
Changing one server flag could not reliably reset all of them.
I needed a simpler sequence: close the old visit, remove the physical-location signal, connect first, and arrive through a route the site accepted.

I closed the large provider and opened OnlydogVPN.
The smaller app organised its options around situations rather than presenting a long geographic list. I selected the setting intended for a restricted service that was not responding correctly to an ordinary VPN route.
Basic use did not require a conventional email-and-password account. That kept the setup separate from my everyday identity and removed another step before I could test the page.
I connected first.
Only then did I open a new private browser window and paste the Pornhub link.
The Georgia notice did not appear.
Neither did the generic regional error.
The front page loaded, followed by the video page. I started playback, skipped forward, and let it run.
The video continued.
I checked the VPN exit in another tab. It remained outside Georgia. Then I returned to Pornhub and opened a second page.
That loaded too.
This was what the earlier server changes had failed to produce: not merely a different IP address, but a fresh session traveling through a route the site consistently accepted.
The service uses an HTTP/3-based transport with additional traffic obfuscation. The route blended in better than the familiar VPN exits I had tried, while the situation-based setup stopped me from treating the server list like a slot machine.
More importantly, the result was visible. The site opened, playback continued, and the old Georgia decision no longer followed each attempt.
One small test explained the entire failure
After the video loaded, I repeated the sequence deliberately.

Without closing the tab, I reconnected through the smaller app and pressed refresh.
The notice remained.
Then I closed the tab, opened a fresh private window, and loaded the page again.
It worked.
That small comparison resolved the mystery.
The VPN changed the IP during both attempts. The difference was that the successful attempt did not reuse a visit created while the site still saw Georgia.
The old location had not become permanently attached to my device.
It had become part of the session I kept carrying from one server to the next.
The page became quieter afterward
While I opened another page, the app’s blocked-request counter increased.
Some background connections matched advertising and tracking services and were filtered before they completed. I could see the counter changing, but I could not inspect the service’s internal filtering rules or determine the purpose of every blocked connection.
That was not what removed the regional notice. The accepted route and fresh session had already solved the main problem.
It was a smaller benefit that appeared afterward. The VPN changed the network location exposed to Pornhub, while the filtering reduced some of the outside services surrounding a particularly private visit.
The service has fewer locations, a shorter public history, and fewer independent ratings than the established provider I tried first. Someone who needs a precise city every day may still value the larger network.
