When Telegram Stayed on “Connecting” in Vietnam, the Best VPN Delivered the Shipping Release

Telegram had been showing Connecting… for nine minutes when the freight agent sent his final SMS: “Release before 11:30 or the cartons stay until tomorrow.” I was in a coworking booth in Ho Chi Minh City with a signed shipping authorisation on my laptop and a Telegram group I could no longer open. I blamed the app, forced it to close and restarted the Wi-Fi. Nothing changed. Then I opened my established VPN, chose a nearby server and watched that app remain on Connecting too.

The document on my desktop authorised a freight forwarder to collect eighty-six cartons of product samples from a warehouse outside the city.

The cartons were scheduled to move to the port that afternoon. Without the signed release, the driver could not collect them, and the booking would roll into the next day. That would put the samples behind the vessel cut-off and delay a buyer presentation in Singapore.

The freight agent’s team used Telegram for the job. The group contained the driver’s details, warehouse contact, booking reference and every version of the packing list.

Email would eventually reach them. “Eventually” was not useful with forty minutes left.

The strange part was that the rest of the internet worked.

The coworking connection opened cloud storage immediately. I could send ordinary email, load news sites and download the signed document from our company drive.

Telegram alone remained frozen.

That failure made more sense after Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology ordered telecom providers to block the messaging service in May 2025. The directive required providers to take measures against Telegram and report their implementation by June 2.1

The result did not always look like a clean nationwide switch being turned off. Access could differ by provider and connection type. In one public Vietnam discussion, people described Telegram failing on home or local mobile networks while still working through a roaming SIM.2

That matched the problem in front of me.

The coworking Wi-Fi was fast enough to move the file.

It simply did not provide a usable route to the app that needed it.

For a moment, the roaming connection looked like the answer.

I attached the shipping release.

The file reached 18 percent, slowed and stopped.

The booth was in the centre of the building, away from the windows. My phone showed one bar of signal, occasionally two.

I carried it into the corridor and placed it on a shelf near the glass wall. The upload resumed, reached 43 percent and failed when the signal dropped again.

The roaming data had found a way to Telegram.

“Release received. Driver entering now.”

A photograph followed from the warehouse gate. The collection truck was beside the security booth, and the driver was holding the printed booking sheet.

At 11:18, the agent posted the update that ended the emergency:

“Cargo collected. Port booking protected.”

The original task was complete. The signed release had reached the correct group, the driver had entered the warehouse and the samples were still moving that afternoon.

Only then did the technical difference matter.

The restrictive-network preset added obfuscation so the connection was less recognisable than the tunnel that had stalled earlier. I could not inspect the coworking network’s internal filtering rules or identify the exact rule separating the two attempts. I could see the useful result: the established provider repeatedly failed on the same Wi-Fi, while the smaller app opened Telegram and delivered both documents.

The phone joined without another account setup

The cartons were moving, but the job was not finished.

I needed to leave for the warehouse and confirm the seal number before the truck continued to the port. The Telegram group would remain the fastest place for updates while I was in the taxi.

I opened the VPN app on my phone.

Instead of creating another account, finding a password or approving a login email, I linked the phone with a verification code displayed on the laptop.

Telegram connected over the phone’s local mobile data.

By the time I reached the building lobby, the freight agent had posted the truck registration and the warehouse had uploaded a photograph of the loaded cartons.

That second connection solved a smaller problem. The laptop had completed the urgent transfer; the phone let me continue the same job while moving away from the coworking Wi-Fi.

But the shipping release did not require a Vietnamese server or the shortest theoretical route to Singapore.

It required Telegram to open on the connection in front of me.
