That explained why a British connection could trigger the prompt. What confused me was why my phone still looked British while I was standing in Paris.
So I ran a simple comparison.

I switched Wi-Fi off and returned to roaming mobile data. The age gate came back. A weather site started showing UK results, and an online shop switched its prices to pounds.
The phone itself was connected to a French mobile network, but the traffic was still being routed through infrastructure associated with my home network. International roaming can work that way: the nearby network carries the radio connection, while the internet traffic is sent through a gateway somewhere else before reaching websites. A traveller in France can therefore still appear to websites as if they are connecting from the UK.
That was the missing piece.
Reddit was not looking at the blue dot on my map. It was seeing the location associated with the connection arriving at its servers.
The hotel’s internet connection exited locally in France, so the prompt disappeared. My roaming connection exited through the UK, so it returned.

A corporate connection can make a laptop appear to be sitting near the company office.
And a VPN replaces the underlying route with its own exit location.
