I Was Tired of Proving My Age to Every Site—What a VPN Could Actually Change

The third age check of the week opened my webcam.

I was at home in London, trying to read an adult health discussion before a telephone appointment with my doctor. The page contained accounts from people who had experienced the same medication side effect I wanted to ask about.

Instead, a verification window covered it.

Confirm that you are over 18.

The first option offered a facial age estimate. The second asked for photo identification.

Two days earlier, a dating app had already asked me to turn my head in front of the camera. Another adult site had offered a mobile-network check. Now a third company wanted another image of my face or driving licence.

I was 35. My age was not the part in doubt.

I tried the camera option because it seemed faster. The scan failed and moved the ID button to the top of the page.

My appointment was fifteen minutes away.

That was when I searched for a different answer: could a VPN stop me from proving the same fact separately to every website?

The short answer

A VPN could prevent some location-triggered verification screens from appearing when the destination accepted the new route. It could not make age-verification systems disappear from every website.

Age checks were spreading faster than reusable proof

The question had become more urgent across the UK.

Since July 2025, services that allow pornographic material have been required to use highly effective age assurance under the Online Safety Act. By 2026, Ofcom described age checks as expanding across pornography, social media, online dating, and gaming services. (Ofcom)

Each service can choose its own method and verification company. One may estimate age from a face. Another may examine an identity document. A third may check a credit card, mobile contract, bank account, or digital identity.

To the visitor, every prompt asks the same question:

Are you old enough?

Behind the prompt, each website may begin a separate process with a different provider and privacy policy.

That fragmentation was the problem in front of me. I did not object to proving adulthood once. I objected to repeatedly handing new companies the raw materials of my identity.

UK privacy guidance points toward a better standard. An age-checking system should collect only what it needs, keep it only as long as necessary, and retain a simple yes-or-no result instead of an identity document whenever that is sufficient. (Org)

The screen asking for my licence did not feel like that kind of system.

It felt like starting over.

A VPN could change the route, not create an age credential

I already had an account with a major VPN provider.

The company had years of public history, extensive support documentation, a large server network, and many independent reviews. Those strengths were why I had subscribed.

I connected to Ireland and reopened the health discussion in a private browser window.

The ID request disappeared.

A proxy warning replaced it.

I tried the Netherlands. The front page loaded, but the discussion returned an access error. Belgium produced a CAPTCHA and then sent me back to the verification screen.

The VPN was changing my public address. What it could not do was issue proof that I was 35.

I was using privacy software to avoid sharing my driving licence with another website, yet the software itself had required a conventional identity before protecting anything.

The comparison I had been making—countries, cities, protocols, server totals—suddenly seemed secondary.

For this problem, collecting less identity at the beginning mattered more than offering a larger server list.


The smaller app let me begin without introducing myself

That advantage existed before I opened a single website.

Then I opened a fresh private window and pasted the health-discussion link.

The verification prompt did not appear.

Neither did the proxy warning.

The page loaded at the comment I had been trying to read. One person described the side effect beginning after a dosage increase. Another explained which questions they had taken to their prescriber. A pinned notice warned readers not to stop medication without medical guidance.

I copied two questions into my notes:

Could the dosage be contributing to this?

What alternatives could preserve the benefit without the same side effect?

The doctor called as I finished the second line.

The original task was complete. I had reached the information without uploading my licence, repeating the facial scan, or creating another named VPN account.

The real solution is proof once, not identity everywhere

After the appointment, I returned to the larger question.

Avoiding one verification screen had solved my immediate problem. It had not fixed the fragmented system behind it.

The more durable answer is reusable, privacy-preserving proof of age.

The European Commission’s age-verification blueprint shows how that can work. A trusted source verifies a person once and issues an anonymous proof that they are over the required age. A website receives the proof without receiving the person’s name, document number, exact birthday, or browsing history. The proof provider does not need to know which service the person visits. That model reverses the current experience.

Instead of showing an identity document to website A, submitting a face scan to provider B, and repeating the process for website C, the user proves the threshold once and presents separate anonymous confirmations.

A VPN cannot create that credential.

What it can do now is reduce how often an unexpected location-based age gate turns into another demand for raw identity.

That made the role of the smaller app clearer. It was not pretending to replace age assurance. It was reducing unnecessary disclosure before I reached a page that did not need to know my name.

The next page showed another reason to keep it installed

Later that evening, I reopened the discussion and followed a link to another article.

The app’s blocked-request counter began rising.

The page was contacting advertising and tracking services beyond the article I had requested. Some of those connections were filtered before they completed.

The VPN route stopped the flat’s ordinary public address from reaching the destination. The account-free setup avoided attaching another email address to the session. The filtering reduced some of the outside services attempting to join after the page loaded.

I could see the blocked count, but I could not inspect the service’s internal filtering rules or determine the purpose of every request it stopped.

Even so, the sequence was straightforward.

I began with less identifying information, reached the page, and reduced some of the tracking surrounding it afterward.

The useful VPN intervened before the ID request became inevitable

The smaller service has fewer locations, a shorter public history, and fewer independent ratings than the established provider I tried first.

Someone who needs a particular city or values a longer record of third-party scrutiny may prefer the larger network.

That was not the decision I faced when the webcam opened.

I needed to reach one legal page without sending a fresh identity document to another verification company. The established provider changed my location but required a named account and left me rotating through exits the destination rejected.

The smaller app asked for less identity before connecting and produced the route that completed the task.
