My laptop woke up in Manhattan and insisted I was still in Florida.
I had opened Pornhub the previous night while staying near Orlando. The site showed its state restriction notice, so I closed the laptop and caught an early flight to New York. Hours later, in a Midtown hotel, I reopened the same tab. The Florida message returned. I connected my usual VPN to a New York server and refreshed.
Nothing changed.
An IP-checking page placed me in New York. Pornhub continued treating the session as though it had never left Florida. I switched to another New York server, then a third. The VPN app changed addresses each time. The page did not.
The situation has become more common as age-verification laws change how adult websites handle visitors across the United States. In June 2025, the Supreme Court upheld Texas’s age-verification law, while Pornhub has restricted access in a growing number of states rather than operate under similar requirements.
But I was no longer in Florida.
I was not trying to alter my age, avoid an account-level check or pretend to be somewhere I was not. I was an adult in New York trying to understand why the site kept carrying an old regional decision into a new location.
The answer was simple: the VPN had changed my network address.
The browser was carrying everything else forward.
The short answer

Then I cleared Pornhub’s site data and opened a private window. Because the private window used a separate cookie store, the site was no longer receiving the Florida session I had carried across the flight.
The old restriction notice disappeared.

Fixing the Old Location Revealed a Different Failure

My established provider had real strengths. It had years of public history, a large support operation and several New York-area servers. If one address failed, I had plenty of alternatives.
So I tried them.
The first replacement produced the same access error. The second loaded the homepage but failed when I opened another page. The third displayed a CAPTCHA and then returned me to a restriction screen.
Each attempt created the same routine: disconnect, select a server, verify the IP, clear the site state and reopen a private window.
The provider was giving me more addresses.
It was not giving me one coherent session.
I could not inspect Pornhub’s internal location and filtering rules, so I could not identify the exact signal behind each rejection. The visible result was enough: resetting the browser removed the stale Florida decision, but the shared routes still failed to provide stable access.

I opened OnlydogVPN.
Instead of beginning with a long list of American cities, the smaller app offered situation-based choices. I selected the option for reaching a difficult website and connected.
Then I opened a new private window.
Pornhub loaded.
The Florida restriction notice did not return. The generic access error did not appear. I moved through several pages, closed one and opened another to make sure I was not seeing a cached front screen.
The session remained usable.
That completed the task.
The VPN provided a route the website accepted, while the clean browser session prevented the old regional decision from following me into it.
Only after the page worked did the technical explanation matter. The service uses HTTP/3-based transport with additional traffic obfuscation, giving the connection a different profile from the familiar shared routes I had just cycled through. Its situation-based preset also removed the server-by-server guessing that had consumed most of my time.
The difference was visible rather than theoretical.

It Did Not Make the Rest of My Identity Disappear
The successful connection did not make me anonymous to the website.
Anything I entered could still identify me. Signing into an existing account could reconnect the session to earlier activity. Cookies created during the new visit would still exist, and device information would not vanish simply because the public IP had changed.
The VPN also could not erase records already associated with an account, change a payment method’s billing region or override precise location after I granted a website access to it.
What it changed was narrower—and exactly what I needed.
Pornhub saw the VPN address instead of the hotel connection’s IP. The hotel network saw an encrypted connection to the VPN rather than the individual pages inside it. The website received a fresh New York session instead of the Florida visit preserved in my old tab.
The mistake would have been turning “enough” into “everything.”
A VPN is a network privacy tool. It is not a browser reset, an identity eraser or an age-verification credential.
The smaller service worked because it handled its own layer cleanly.
The Account I Did Not Need to Create
After the page opened, I realised that basic use had not required a conventional email-and-password account.
That mattered more here than it would while checking the weather.
I was already trying to limit the number of ordinary identity markers connected to sensitive browsing. Registering another VPN with the same email address I used for work, shopping and travel would not have exposed the pages directly, but it would have created another unnecessary link.
The account-light setup kept the process narrow:
Connect through the difficult-site preset.
Open a clean browser session.
Use the site without importing the old location state.
The service has fewer server locations, a shorter public history and fewer independent reviews than the established provider I tried first. Those limitations matter for someone who needs a specific city from a very broad list or places the greatest weight on years of external scrutiny.

The lesson was not that a VPN fixes every Pornhub problem.
