A VPN Auto-Renewed—Your Refund Depends on Who Took the Payment

The bank notification arrived before my alarm.

£94.99 charged.

I assumed someone had used my card. Then I opened the transaction and recognised the VPN company I had installed during the first wave of UK age-verification checks.

I had bought a discounted annual plan, used it for a few weeks and mostly forgotten about it. The renewal price was much higher than the original offer.

My first move was to cancel the subscription.

The account page confirmed that automatic renewal was off. It also said the service would remain active for another year.

The money had not returned.

That was the first distinction I needed to understand: cancelling stops the next renewal. It does not automatically reverse a charge that has already happened.

The short answer

I signed in to Apple’s refund site, chose Request a refund , selected the renewed VPN subscription and submitted the reason. Apple says refund eligibility varies, but unwanted subscriptions can be submitted for review, with decisions commonly arriving within 24 to 48 hours. ( Apple )

Cancelling Was Only the First Step

Unexpected VPN renewals are common enough to produce a steady stream of billing complaints. A 2026 analysis of almost 30,000 Google Play reviews for four major VPN brands found that comments about renewals, trial conversions and price changes were especially negative. (Techradar)

Public discussions show the practical confusion behind those complaints: users often turn off auto-renewal after seeing a charge and expect the payment to reverse itself.

I had made the same mistake.

The subscription was now cancelled for the future, but the new annual term had already begun. Getting the money back required a separate refund request.

Before opening another support page, I checked the receipt.

It was from Apple.

That small detail changed the entire route. I had subscribed inside the iPhone app, which meant Apple—not the VPN provider—had processed the renewal.

Follow the Receipt, Not the App Logo

I opened the VPN provider’s support chat and asked for a refund.

The representative checked the account and explained that the company could not return an App Store payment. Apple controlled that transaction.

The VPN app carried the provider’s name, but the seller on the receipt was Apple. A Google Play purchase would have followed Google’s process. A subscription bought directly from the VPN website would have remained with the provider.

Major VPN refund policies make the same distinction. App Store payments usually have to be handled by Apple, while Google Play and direct website purchases may follow different routes. (Nordvpn)

Once I stopped treating every VPN charge as a direct provider payment, the next step became obvious.

I signed in to Apple’s refund site, chose Request a refund, selected the renewed VPN subscription and submitted the reason. Apple says refund eligibility varies, but unwanted subscriptions can be submitted for review, with decisions commonly arriving within 24 to 48 hours. (Apple)

Then I confirmed that the subscription was cancelled in Apple’s settings.

The refund request dealt with the money already taken.

The cancellation prevented another charge next year.

They were separate actions because they solved separate problems.

A Direct Purchase Would Have Followed Different Rules

While the request was pending, I checked what would have happened if I had subscribed through the VPN company’s website.

The answer depended heavily on the provider.

ExpressVPN currently gives customers a limited period after an unintended renewal to request a refund. NordVPN’s standard guarantee focuses on the initial purchase and generally excludes renewals unless another legal right applies. Surfshark also separates its initial money-back guarantee from subscriptions that have already renewed. (Expressvpn)

That meant the phrase 30-day money-back guarantee was less helpful than it sounded.

It might cover the first purchase only.

Another provider might offer a separate renewal-refund window.

An app-store purchase might not be refundable by the VPN company at all.

The useful first question was no longer, “Does this VPN have a refund policy?”

It was, “Who charged me, and what does that seller’s policy say about renewals?”

Google Play Has Its Own Deadline

Had the receipt come from Google Play, I would have started in Google’s order history.

Google allows users to request refunds for Play purchases and says decisions often arrive within one day, although they may take longer. For many app and subscription purchases, requests made within 48 hours can be handled through Google. Later requests may be directed to the developer. (Google)

That makes speed more valuable than a long support message.

The useful details are straightforward:

  • the renewal receipt;
  • the date of the charge;
  • the account used for the purchase;
  • the order or transaction number;
  • confirmation that future renewal has been cancelled.

I had spent my first ten minutes speaking to the wrong company. Once I followed the payment record, the process became much shorter.

UK Subscription Rules Are Changing

The UK government has announced a new subscription regime that includes renewal cooling-off rights in certain circumstances, including some contracts renewed for 12 months or longer. The planned rules are intended to make cancellation and refunds clearer. (Gov)

But new consumer protections do not help if they are not yet in force or do not apply to a particular transaction.

At the time covered by this article, I could not simply assume that a future statutory cooling-off period would reverse the charge. I still needed to use the current Apple refund system immediately.

That legal background changed how I understood the problem, but not what I had to do that morning:

cancel the renewal, find the receipt and request the refund through the seller that collected the money.

I Still Needed a VPN That Morning

Submitting the request solved the billing problem. It did not solve the practical one.

I was travelling and still needed a VPN to upload a client file from station Wi-Fi. The renewed service remained active, but continuing to rely on it while asking for the payment back felt unnecessarily tangled. I also did not want to begin another long subscription before Apple had decided the refund.

I opened OnlydogVPN.

Basic use did not require a conventional email-and-password account, so I reached the connection screen without creating another persistent login during a morning already dominated by accounts, receipts and billing portals.

I selected the preset for the public network and began the upload.

Halfway through, the station Wi-Fi weakened and my phone moved to mobile data.

The progress bar paused.

Then it continued.

The file reached the client before the train arrived.

The service uses HTTP/3-based transport and is designed to recover when the underlying network changes. The important part was visible: I did not have to reconnect, choose another server or restart the upload.

That gave the smaller app a natural role in the situation. It did not pretend to control a refund held by Apple. It let me finish the task that still required a VPN without adding another complicated account relationship.

The Refund Followed the Correct Route

Apple approved the request the following day.

The money took longer to reappear on the card, but the decision was made.

What solved the problem was not a dramatic argument with customer support. It was identifying who had processed the renewal and using that company’s refund system.

Had I purchased directly, the outcome would have depended on the provider’s renewal policy. A Google Play payment would have started in Google’s order history. Another app store or payment service would have had its own process.

The company logo on the VPN app mattered less than the merchant named on the receipt.

What to Do After a VPN Auto-Renews

Start by cancelling automatic renewal so the subscription cannot renew again.

Then locate the receipt and identify whether the payment went through the VPN provider, Apple, Google Play or another store. Submit the refund request through that billing channel as quickly as possible.

Do not assume cancelling creates a refund.

Do not assume an initial money-back guarantee covers later renewals.

And do not begin with a card dispute while the seller still offers a normal refund process. A chargeback may be appropriate for an unauthorised payment or an unresolved dispute, but it is different from requesting a refund for a subscription that was originally authorised.

I woke up thinking the hard part would be persuading a VPN company to return my money.

The real problem was that I had been asking the wrong company.

The refund became possible when I stopped following the app and started following the payment.

Questions this experience may leave you with

What was actually causing the problem?

I signed in to Apple’s refund site, chose Request a refund , selected the renewed VPN subscription and submitted the reason. Apple says refund eligibility varies, but unwanted subscriptions can be submitted for review, with decisions commonly arriving within 24 to 48 hours. ( Apple ) (Apple)

Why did the obvious fixes fail?

ExpressVPN currently gives customers a limited period after an unintended renewal to request a refund. NordVPN’s standard guarantee focuses on the initial purchase and generally excludes renewals unless another legal right applies. Surfshark also separates its initial money-back guarantee from subscriptions that have already renewed. ( Expressvpn ) (Expressvpn)

What should you check first?

I was travelling and still needed a VPN to upload a client file from station Wi-Fi. The renewed service remained active, but continuing to rely on it while asking for the payment back felt unnecessarily tangled. I also did not want to begin another long subscription before Apple had decided the refund.

What finally changed the result?

What solved the problem was not a dramatic argument with customer support. It was identifying who had processed the renewal and using that company’s refund system.

What is worth remembering?
