The confusion follows naturally. Wi-Fi feels like one connection shared by the entire home. When the VPN icon turns green on one screen, it is easy to imagine that the router—and therefore every device connected to it—has changed.
The tablet showed me the boundary.
The laptop had taken a different route. Everything else in the house was still using the ordinary connection.
The VPN belonged to the device running it
A VPN app installed on a laptop protects the traffic from that laptop. It does not reach across the Wi-Fi and collect traffic from a phone, tablet, television or games console.
My laptop and tablet shared the same router, but they did not share the same VPN connection.
On the laptop, the VPN app placed its encrypted tunnel between the applications and the internet. The tablet had no tunnel of its own, so its traffic continued directly through the household internet provider.
That explained the two screens:
The laptop appeared to be connecting from the VPN route.
The tablet still appeared to be connecting from the UK and received the age check.
The VPN was working. My assumption about its range was not.
Once that was clear, restarting the router again would not help. I had to decide whether to protect the entire network or simply add the second device.
Protecting the whole home means changing the router
A VPN can cover every device on a Wi-Fi network when the router itself runs the VPN connection.
In that setup, the router sends household traffic through the tunnel. Phones, tablets, televisions and other connected devices are covered without each one running a separate app.
That sounds like the cleanest answer, especially for devices that cannot install VPN software. So I opened the router guide from the established provider already running on my laptop.
The provider was a reasonable place to begin. It had years of public history, extensive support documentation and instructions for many router models.
The guide first asked me to identify the router model and firmware. Then I had to determine whether it supported VPN client mode, find the administration password and choose a protocol. My internet provider’s router did not expose the settings shown in the instructions.
The remaining options involved replacing the router, installing different firmware or adding another device between the existing router and the rest of the house.
Those could make sense as a long-term project. They made less sense with two people waiting to watch one documentary.

There were only two devices I needed that evening. The best option was no longer the one capable of covering every speaker and thermostat.

A work laptop may already use an employer’s VPN. A games console may perform better on the direct connection. Banking or streaming services may react differently to a shared VPN address. Guests joining the Wi-Fi may not need the same route as the person who configured it.

The laptop can use the VPN while the television remains direct. The tablet can join when needed. A phone can use the same service at home and then continue using it on public Wi-Fi or mobile data outside the house.

The smaller service does have fewer server locations, a shorter public history and fewer independent reviews than the established provider whose router guide I opened first.
