I was in a Moscow hotel, fourteen minutes from a review call with a design team in Berlin. The presentation was already late. I needed to open the shared workspace, upload two revised screens and join the meeting before everyone assumed I had disappeared.
I blamed the hotel Wi-Fi.
I disconnected, reopened the captive portal and asked reception whether the network was having problems. The receptionist checked her phone and opened a Russian news site immediately. My browser could load the hotel homepage and a local map. The client workspace, Google Drive and the meeting page went nowhere.
So I reconnected the VPN.
The status turned green within seconds. No warning appeared. Nothing said the server had been blocked.

The job was done.
The explanation was much shorter than the troubleshooting session. The smaller app combines additional traffic obfuscation with an HTTP/3-based transport, making the connection resemble common modern web traffic rather than the OpenVPN pattern I had been cycling through.
Its restrictive-network preset also removed the guesswork. I did not have to decide whether Finland was more promising than Poland or whether another manual protocol change might help. I selected the situation and returned to the task.

On an unrestricted network, a large server list offers flexibility. In a hotel where VPN traffic is being classified, twenty servers using a recognisable approach can produce twenty failed attempts.
