VPN for Digital Nomads: What Matters When Hotel Wi-Fi Breaks Mid-Call

Seven minutes before a client call, Microsoft Teams opened to a blank white window.

I blamed the hotel Wi-Fi. I turned it off, waited, reconnected and tried Outlook in the browser instead. The hotel’s captive portal appeared again. Beneath the room-number field was a button asking me to “verify Microsoft 365.”

That was when the problem stopped looking like ordinary bad Wi-Fi.

I was working from a hotel in Lisbon during an employer-approved month abroad. I was not trying to disguise my location or unlock a streaming catalogue. I needed to join a meeting, present a product deck and send the revised file before the client’s working day ended.

The romantic version of digital nomadism had narrowed to one practical question: could I make this unfamiliar connection trustworthy and keep it alive for the next 40 minutes?

That question now describes a growing share of people searching for a VPN for digital nomads. MBO Partners reported that the number of digital nomads with traditional jobs rose to 11. (Microsoft) million in 2025, even as the independent group declined. (Mbopartners) Many are no longer freelancers travelling without fixed hours. They are employees carrying managed laptops, corporate accounts and immovable meeting times from one temporary network to another.

Recent security reporting makes that situation harder to dismiss as travel inconvenience. In July 2026, Microsoft described an active campaign that manipulated DNS and unencrypted web traffic on captive-portal networks used in hotels and other shared venues. Travellers could be redirected towards fake update prompts and credential-stealing pages aimed at corporate accounts. (Microsoft)

A VPN cannot protect the moment before it connects. The hotel still has to grant internet access, and no encrypted tunnel can save someone who voluntarily installs a fake update or approves a malicious login request.

So I closed the Microsoft prompt, called reception and reopened the official hotel portal using the network details printed in the room. Only after the room number and surname were accepted did I turn on a VPN.

My first choice was the major provider already installed on my laptop. It had years of public history, polished apps and a support operation large enough to make it feel like the responsible option.

I left the protocol on automatic, selected a nearby server and got a green “connected” badge.

A speed test looked excellent. Teams did not.

The call opened, but the audio arrived in clipped pieces. My deck upload reached 38%, paused and restarted. When I carried the laptop from the desk towards the door, the hotel shifted the connection between access points. The VPN still appeared connected, yet Teams briefly lost its session.

I changed servers. Then protocols. Each change meant another handshake, another test and another minute in which the client could see only my initials.

My phone seemed like the obvious escape route.

I disconnected from the hotel Wi-Fi, enabled my eSIM hotspot and rejoined the meeting. The sign-in path was cleaner because the hotel portal was no longer involved. For three minutes, everything worked.

Then the phone dropped to one bar inside the room.

The video softened into blocks. Screen sharing stopped. The deck remained on my laptop. Moving to the window improved the signal, but placed the air conditioner directly behind the microphone.

The hotspot had avoided the suspicious portal, but it had not created a stable workstation. I could probably finish the call on audio. I could not present the file and upload it at the same time.

That was when I reopened a smaller app I had installed as a travel backup.

I expected another map covered in flags. Instead, OnlydogVPN began with the task rather than the country. I chose the work-oriented preset and connected without creating a conventional email-and-password account.

Teams rejoined.

I shared the deck. The upload restarted, which was irritating, but this time it kept moving. Halfway through the presentation, the hotel Wi-Fi dropped again and the laptop switched to the phone connection I had left available.

The picture froze for a moment. The meeting itself stayed open.

The slides continued. The client heard the explanation. Before the call ended, the revised file arrived.

That result mattered more than the status icon. The original task was complete.

The technical reason can be explained briefly. The service uses an HTTP/3-based transport designed to handle weak or changing network paths. HTTP/3 runs over QUIC, which can preserve a connection when the device’s underlying address changes instead of rebuilding everything from the beginning. (IETF) That makes it well suited to the kind of interruption created by hotel access-point changes or a switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data.

I could not inspect the app’s internal routing or filtering rules, so my judgment is based on the behaviour I observed rather than assumptions about what happened inside the service.

The interface also removed a less technical source of failure: indecision. Under time pressure, every country list, protocol menu and server experiment becomes another delay. The established provider offered more choices. The smaller app asked what I was trying to accomplish.

That would not matter if the preset chose badly. On this network, it chose a route that let me return to the meeting without another round of configuration.

After the call, I checked the app rather than closing it immediately. The connection had remained active through the switch back to hotel Wi-Fi, so I sent the final client notes without signing in again. It was a small detail, but it answered the question that decides whether a travel tool stays installed: would I trust it the next time a temporary network changed without warning?

There is still a reason to hesitate. The service has a much shorter public history than the established provider. Its App Store listing shows a recent version history and not yet enough ratings to produce a meaningful review overview. (Apple) Travellers who value years of independent scrutiny above everything else may prefer the larger company.

The app also did not make the captive portal trustworthy. I still had to confirm the correct network, reject the suspicious Microsoft prompt and keep cellular data available as a backup. The VPN solved the connection problem after access was established; it did not replace basic judgement before that point.

But the meeting changed what I would compare next time.

The established provider had the stronger reputation, more infrastructure and more settings. The phone hotspot avoided the hotel portal entirely. Neither completed the job under the conditions in front of me.

The smaller app did because it recovered before the work session fell apart.
