Why Google Keeps Showing CAPTCHAs on a VPN—and What Finally Stopped Them

The first CAPTCHA appeared while I was searching for a client’s new office address.

I clicked the squares containing traffic lights, waited for the green check mark and returned to the results. Then I searched for the nearest train station.

Another CAPTCHA.

This one wanted motorcycles. The next wanted crosswalks. By the fourth puzzle, Google had stopped feeling like a search engine and started feeling like an unpaid image-labeling job.

I had eighteen minutes before a video call. I needed to confirm three facts, open the client’s website and download a PDF from Google Drive. Instead, I was proving repeatedly that I understood road furniture.

I blamed the browser first.

I cleared Google’s cookies, opened a private window and tried the search again. The unusual-traffic page returned. I disabled two extensions, restarted Chrome and signed back into my Google account.

Another grid of bicycles appeared.

Then I turned off the VPN.

Google loaded immediately.

Google Was Reacting to the Address, Not to Me

Google’s own explanation is more specific than the warning on the screen.

A consumer VPN replaces the hotel’s public IP address with one belonging to the VPN service. That exit address may be shared by many people. Google does not necessarily see each traveler, remote worker and automated scraper as a separate visitor. It sees a large volume of searches arriving through the same entrance.

The VPN had not made my searches robotic. It had placed them behind a public identity whose recent behavior I did not control.

That also explained why changing browser settings had accomplished so little. I had changed the window, the cookies and the account session while leaving the part Google distrusted—the exit IP—untouched.

Why Ordinary Research Can Look Suspicious

Each switch gave me a different IP address, but the server list offered no indication of which one Google would accept without interruption. More locations simply gave me more addresses to test manually.

The Backup That Started With the Task

At that point, stop treating it as a browser problem.

A different server may help because it provides another public IP address. But when several servers produce the same result, endlessly changing countries becomes a poor use of time. The useful question is not whether the provider has another location. It is whether the next route reaches Google with a better reputation.

Turning the VPN off can confirm that its exit address is involved, but it creates an unnecessary choice between usable search and the protection the VPN was meant to provide.

A better result is to keep the tunnel and change the route behind it.
