Sunday Ticket Blacked Out My Team Because My VPN Put Me Back Home

The Eagles were already across midfield when NFL Sunday Ticket replaced the player with “This game is unavailable in your area.” I was in a Denver hotel, nearly two thousand miles from Philadelphia, using the subscription I had bought specifically to watch my home team while travelling. I blamed the hotel television, unplugged the streaming device and signed back into YouTube. The blackout returned before the drive ended.

My brother was watching from his apartment in Philadelphia.

He sent me a message:

“Did you see that catch?”

I had seen the loading circle before it.

The hotel internet worked. The Sunday Ticket subscription was active. The game was a regular Sunday-afternoon broadcast rather than a national exclusive.

From Denver, it should have been exactly the kind of game Sunday Ticket carried.

Yet the service was treating me as though I were sitting back home.

The short answer

The VPN had chosen Philadelphia automatically.

That had felt sensible.

My account was registered there. My brother was there. The team was there. When people travel, “connect back home” sounds like the safest possible instruction.

For Sunday Ticket, it was the wrong one.

The package carries regular-season Sunday-afternoon games that are not shown on local CBS or Fox stations in the viewer’s current area. A game airing locally is excluded because the viewer is expected to watch it through the local channel instead. (Google)

In Philadelphia, the Eagles game was local.

In Denver, it was out of market.

By sending my connection back to Philadelphia, the VPN had transformed an available Sunday Ticket game into one the package was not supposed to show.

The blackout did not mean the VPN had failed to move me.

It meant the VPN had moved me to exactly the wrong place.

The playback area was still stuck at home

I opened YouTube’s location settings.

The first line was correct. I had not moved house.

The second was not. I was standing beside an unopened suitcase in Colorado.

YouTube TV uses the current playback area to determine local channels and Sunday Ticket availability. Its NFL guidance directs travellers to update that location and, when needed, confirm it through a phone with location access. (Google)

I selected Update.

The television displayed a verification prompt. I opened the page on my phone, turned off its VPN and allowed location access over mobile data.

A few seconds later, the screen changed:

I returned to the Eagles game.

This time, Sunday Ticket showed a different message:

“VPN or proxy detected.”

Correcting the market had removed the first problem.

Now the protected route itself was being rejected.

A Denver server fixed the label, not the connection

The established provider had years of public history, a mature application and servers across the United States.

I changed from Philadelphia to Denver.

The VPN connected immediately.

YouTube still rejected it.

I selected another Denver server.

The game tile appeared, but the player returned to the proxy warning.

Salt Lake City loaded the schedule and failed when I pressed Watch.

Dallas made the Eagles game disappear from the Sunday Ticket row until I refreshed the playback area.

Every server changed something on the screen. None started the game.

Turning the VPN off confirmed the real failure

I disconnected the established provider.

The Eagles game opened immediately.

The replay showed the touchdown I had missed. The broadcast then returned to the kickoff as though the previous fifteen minutes had not happened.

The subscription worked.

Denver was the correct playback area.

The VPN exits were triggering the failure.

That gave me a temporary solution: leave the VPN off.

It also removed the reason I had enabled one in the first place.

The hotel network was shared, unfamiliar and controlled by someone else. I still needed to check work email after the game, and I did not want to spend the afternoon switching protection on and off around every task.

Disabling the VPN answered the support page.

It did not answer my situation.

The useful solution had to keep Denver as Denver, protect the laptop and still reach the player.


The hotel network made server guessing even less useful

That brief frustration matched the room in front of me.

A hotel can place many guests behind the same public connection. Adding a heavily shared commercial VPN exit does not make that route look more ordinary.

Streaming services see the public address where traffic reaches them. Some of those addresses are already classified as VPN, proxy or hosting infrastructure. (Maxmind) A server can be nearby and fast while still being easy to recognise.

The map in the VPN app showed geography.

YouTube judged whether it trusted the route.

Once that became clear, opening more city names felt less like troubleshooting and more like repeating the same mistake.

The smaller app kept the game where I was

I closed the established provider and opened the smaller backup on my laptop.

The first screen did not ask me to choose Philadelphia, Denver or anywhere else.

It asked what I was trying to do.

I selected the preset for streaming on a shared network.

The connection opened.

Before returning to the game, I checked the location page once more.

Nothing had been pushed back home.

I pressed Watch.

The player opened.

The Eagles lined up for their next possession.

No blackout message.

No request to verify the television again.

The subscription had not changed

The successful stream did not expand what Sunday Ticket included.

It did not add Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, Thursday games or broadcasts already carried by the local CBS and Fox stations in Denver.

It had stopped interfering with the rights attached to my location and subscription.

Had the Eagles game been airing on Denver’s local station, Sunday Ticket would have excluded it correctly. Had it been a national game, I would have needed the service carrying that broadcast.

Neither applied.

The game belonged in Sunday Ticket from Denver.

The hometown VPN server had blacked it out, and the established provider’s alternative exits had been detected before the player could use the correct market.

Once the route worked, the subscription behaved exactly as purchased.

The hotel Wi-Fi weakened in the fourth quarter

With six minutes left, the hotel network began to stall.

The picture dropped in quality.

The audio continued over a frozen image, then stopped.

My phone still showed a strong 5G connection, so I enabled its hotspot and moved the laptop away from hotel Wi-Fi.

The player paused briefly.

Then the broadcast continued.

The current playback area remained Denver.

The game did not return to its landing page.

The proxy warning did not reappear.

The map had encouraged the wrong instinct

The smaller service has fewer locations, fewer independent reviews and a shorter public history than the established provider. That is its clearest limitation.

Before kickoff, those differences made the larger network seem safer.

More American cities appeared to mean more ways around a blackout.

In practice, the first city created the blackout, and the next cities triggered detection.

My Home Area was supposed to remain Philadelphia.

My Current Playback Area was supposed to be Denver.

The Eagles game was supposed to be out of market from Denver.

Once those facts were accurate, the VPN had only one useful job: protect the connection without contradicting them.

The large provider kept asking where I wanted to appear.

The smaller app let Sunday Ticket use where I actually was.

For this NFL blackout, getting back home was not the solution.

It was the mistake that made the game disappear.
