Why Google Keeps Showing CAPTCHAs on a German VPN Server

The first CAPTCHA appeared while I was searching for a German customs code. I had 23 minutes before a courier collected a parcel from the hotel reception, and the commercial invoice still needed one number. I selected Frankfurt in a well-known VPN app, opened Google and typed the product name. Nine traffic lights later, I reached the results. The second search produced bicycles. The third triggered the “unusual traffic” warning and another grid of images. I blamed the hotel Wi-Fi, disconnected the VPN and tried again. Google opened normally—but the supplier portal I needed no longer showed its German version.

The short answer

That was when I stopped treating CAPTCHAs as an unavoidable cost of using any VPN. The problem was not encryption itself. It was the exit route in front of me.

The CAPTCHA was judging the exit address

I had chosen a German server for an ordinary reason.

I was travelling, working from a hotel and trying to complete a shipment for a German client. The VPN gave me the regional pages I needed while keeping my browsing inside an encrypted connection on the hotel network.

The Frankfurt label made the setup look precise. Google’s response made it feel personal:

“Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network.”

My searches were not unusual. I had entered three product descriptions and opened two official pages. But Google was not seeing only my activity. It was seeing the public IP address shared by everyone using that VPN exit.

Google explains that the warning can appear when automated searches come from the same network, including a shared VPN. Legitimate users can therefore inherit the reputation of an address already associated with suspicious traffic.

That changed the meaning of the puzzle.

Google was not necessarily accusing my laptop of behaving like a bot. It was reacting to the recent history of the address representing me.

A popular VPN exit may carry traffic from thousands of people. Most are ordinary users. A few may run scrapers, automated searches or other tools that trigger anti-abuse systems. From Google’s side, all of them arrive through the same front door.

I had borrowed the address for the afternoon. I had also inherited its reputation.

“Germany” described the location, not the quality of the route

My first response was to reconnect to another German server.

That seemed reasonable. The provider had several German locations, a mature app and a large infrastructure. If one address had a bad reputation, another should work.

The next server opened Google without a challenge. I searched for the product category, clicked a result and returned to refine the wording.

Another CAPTCHA appeared.

I switched from Frankfurt to Berlin. Google asked me to identify buses. I solved the grid, submitted the search and immediately received another challenge.

The country stayed the same. The experience did not improve.

That was the point at which the server map stopped being useful. A German label told me roughly where the traffic exited. It did not reveal how many people shared the address, what activity had recently passed through it or how Google currently rated that network.

Two VPN routes can both appear to be in Germany while producing very different treatment from search engines and websites.

I had been choosing by geography. Google was judging by reputation.

Changing cities inside the same large pool began to feel less like selecting a better route and more like drawing another numbered ticket from the same machine.

The repeated interruption became the real failure

One CAPTCHA would have been annoying but manageable.

The loop changed the task.

I was translating product descriptions between German and English, checking customs terms and comparing them with the client’s previous invoice. Every useful search created another opportunity to be stopped.

The courier timer kept moving.

Other VPN users describe the same practical pattern: they solve one challenge, complete a search or two and then face another, eventually switching servers repeatedly in search of an address Google accepts.

That detail matters because “just solve the CAPTCHA” assumes the interruption happens once.

In reality, the cost accumulates. The challenge breaks concentration, clears partially typed searches and turns a five-minute lookup into a sequence of negotiations with an anti-bot system.

The established provider was still doing part of its job. My traffic exited through Germany, the supplier portal showed its local version, and the hotel network could not see the pages inside the tunnel.

But the route made the search required to complete that portal nearly unusable.

The provider had given me the correct country and the wrong working conditions.

A dedicated IP was too large a solution

A dedicated IP could reduce the problem by giving one customer an address that is not shared with a large crowd.

That may be worthwhile for someone who repeatedly encounters CAPTCHAs, business login warnings or blocked services. It can also mean another fee, another configuration and a longer commitment.

I did not need Google to recognise the same address for the next year. I needed ten clean searches before the courier arrived.

Disconnecting the VPN was not useful either. Google became easier, but the supplier portal returned to its international page, and the hotel network regained visibility into the services I contacted.

The choice looked unnecessarily narrow:

Keep the German route and keep proving I was human.

Or abandon the route and lose the regional setup that made the work possible.

The next route completed the task

The useful result appeared before I needed an explanation: the search sequence finished.

Changing providers had given me a different exit identity and network path. Google treated that route differently from the crowded German exits I had tried first.

The smaller service has fewer server locations and a shorter public history than the established provider. But the larger German server list had left me solving image grids, while the route in front of me let me finish the invoice.

That was the comparison that mattered.

The second benefit appeared after the invoice was sent

With the courier problem resolved, I reopened the supplier catalogue to verify the package weight.

A blocked-request counter began rising as the page loaded. The service was filtering advertising and tracking requests that would otherwise have accompanied the browsing session. I could see the counter and the quieter page behaviour, although I could not independently inspect every internal filtering rule.

That filtering was not why the CAPTCHAs disappeared. The changed route had already solved the main problem.

It addressed a smaller irritation afterward. Fewer unnecessary background requests were leaving the browser while I moved between search results, supplier pages and the invoice system.

There was nothing else to configure. The benefit appeared after the urgent work was complete, which gave me a reason to keep the app running rather than close it with the invoice.

What I stopped trying

I stopped clearing cookies after every CAPTCHA.

Cookies and browser state can affect anti-bot systems, but the pattern on my screen was more direct: the challenges appeared on particular VPN exits and disappeared as soon as I used another route.

Rebuilding the browser was aimed at the wrong layer.

I also stopped assuming that the nearest server would be the least troublesome. Frankfurt was geographically sensible, but distance did not repair the reputation of a heavily shared address.

Most importantly, I stopped reading the country label as a quality score.

A server flag can tell me where an IP address appears to be. It cannot tell me whether Google associates that address with ordinary browsing or a crowd of automated requests.

The map showed Germany.

The browser showed whether the route was usable.

The German server was never the real requirement

The established provider offered scale, many German exits and years of public history. It also turned a time-sensitive search into a repeated test of whether I could recognise crosswalks.

The smaller service offered fewer locations, but it supplied what I actually needed: a German route that Google allowed me to use normally long enough to complete the invoice.

I had begun by choosing a server based on the country printed beside it. I ended by judging the connection on whether the next search opened without asking me to answer for everyone who had previously used its address.

For that courier deadline, the useful German server was not the one closest to Frankfurt. It was the one that let me finish my work without repeatedly proving I was human.
