The unlisted VR180 video was already open in front of me, its thumbnail floating above the desk in my Shanghai hotel room. I pinched Play. The spinner turned once and stopped. I blamed the hotel Wi-Fi, disconnected, rejoined the network and accepted the captive portal again. A normal webpage loaded immediately. The video still would not move, and the client call began in 18 minutes.

The timing made the failure especially irritating. YouTube had finally released a native visionOS app in February 2026, bringing standard videos, 3D content, 360-degree footage and VR180 directly to Apple Vision Pro.1 After two years of relying on Safari and third-party workarounds, the headset finally had the video app it should have had from the beginning.

That was why I was wearing it. I needed to review a fast camera movement at 02:14, decide whether it created motion discomfort and send the editor a yes-or-no answer before our call.

The app was no longer the missing piece. The network was.

That was the point at which I stopped treating the green icon as the result.

A free route that lasted thirty seconds

I installed a reputable free tier next, partly to check whether the first provider was having a temporary problem. It connected quickly and asked for no payment.

For about thirty seconds, it appeared to work.

The video opened in low resolution, sharpened briefly and then dissolved into a smeared frame. I changed exits twice. One was congested. The other returned me to the loading circle.

The attempt proved that the app and headset could begin playback. It also showed why “it opened once” was too weak a standard for immersive content.
