A VPN Hid My IP Address—But the Website Still Knew Me

The forum knew who I was before I typed a word.

I had turned on a VPN, selected a server outside the UK, and reopened a discussion about a private health issue. The age-check prompt that had stopped me earlier was gone. I assumed I was now browsing anonymously.

Then my usual profile picture appeared in the corner.

A half-written reply from the previous evening was still waiting in the text box. The site remembered my account, my preferences, and exactly where I had stopped reading.

I blamed the VPN. I disconnected, chose another server, and refreshed.

Nothing changed.

My public IP address was different, but the website still welcomed me by name.

I was trying to ask a question I did not want connected to my normal online identity. The subject was not illegal or dramatic. It was simply personal enough that I did not want it following me into advertising profiles, search suggestions, or the account I used for work.

Changing countries had removed the age-check interruption. It had not made me anonymous.

Why a new IP address feels like a new identity

That helps explain what many people expect a VPN to do. It changes the address a website sees, so it can feel as though the person behind the address has changed too.

But a VPN changes the route. It does not empty the browser’s memory.

My browser was carrying the stronger identifiers

The VPN had worked as a VPN.

My internet provider saw an encrypted connection to the VPN server rather than the forum itself. The forum saw the server’s IP address instead of the address assigned to my home.

It still recognised me because I had arrived with better identification than an IP address.

I was signed into my usual account. A cookie preserved the login. Other browser data remembered my settings and unfinished draft. The distinction was suddenly obvious:

A VPN changes where the traffic appears to come from.

It does not erase accounts, cookies, email addresses, phone numbers, payment details, or the identifying signals already stored in the browser.

That was exactly what I had done. I had hidden the road to the forum while arriving with my name badge still attached.

Once I understood that, choosing a more distant server seemed irrelevant. The real task was to stop one sensitive session from reconnecting itself to the identity I used everywhere else.

The established provider added another permanent account

I had started with a major VPN company for sensible reasons.

It had years of public history, a large support operation, many independent reviews, and servers in almost every region I might need. Those are meaningful strengths for a service trusted with internet traffic.

I needed to restart the identity, not just the connection

I closed the forum and opened a separate browser profile with none of my usual logins, cookies, saved passwords, or extensions.

Once it connected, I returned to the forum through the clean browser profile.

My usual avatar did not appear. The abandoned draft was gone. The site saw the VPN address rather than my home IP, while the browser arrived without the stored identifiers that had recognised me earlier.

I created a one-purpose alias and reopened the health discussion.

This time I could read it without being returned to my everyday account. I wrote the question, removed one detail that was more personal than useful, and pressed Post.

The message appeared under the alias.

That was the result I had actually wanted. I had not become an untraceable person. I had kept one sensitive question separate from the online identity attached to my work, ordinary browsing, and home connection.
