Why Changing Your VPN Location Does Not Move Your Dating App

I changed my VPN location to Lisbon, closed the dating app, reopened it, and waited for local profiles to appear. Nothing changed. The same people from London were still on the screen, including one profile I had already declined twice. I switched servers, turned Wi-Fi off, and restarted my phone. Still London.

I was flying the next evening and wanted to arrange a coffee before arriving. My assumption had been simple: websites use an IP address to estimate location, a VPN changes that address, and the dating app should therefore believe I was near the VPN server.

That assumption was not completely foolish. A VPN can make an ordinary website see its connection coming from another city or country. But dating apps are not ordinary websites. They can ask the phone itself where it is.

That was the distinction I had missed.

The short answer

In my case, that meant the Portuguese VPN server was not the solution. It was one more location signal that disagreed with the phone.

The VPN had moved, but the profile had not

A VPN changes the route used by internet traffic and replaces the public IP address visible to online services. It does not move the phone’s GPS coordinates.

Phones can determine location through GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, mobile towers, and other device signals. Dating apps may also collect an IP address, but when they have permission to use the phone’s location, the IP is only one clue among several.

So my large, familiar VPN had done exactly what it was supposed to do. It had given me a Portuguese IP address. The dating app was simply using a different location signal to decide which profiles to show.

That explains a recurring frustration in public dating-app discussions: people change VPN servers, clear app caches, reinstall the app, and still see profiles from the original city.

Bumble’s own troubleshooting guidance reflects this. It tells users with an incorrect location to check the app’s device-location permission and notes that a VPN can interfere with detection. It also recommends switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data because network routing can affect the result.

In my case, that meant the Portuguese VPN server was not the solution. It was one more location signal that disagreed with the phone.

The server map had looked impressive when I subscribed. At that moment, however, the number of cities on the map did not help me complete the task.

The obvious workaround reached too far

The next suggestion I found was a free GPS-spoofing app.

This sounded more direct. Instead of changing the internet route, it would supply the phone with invented coordinates. On Android, mock-location tools use a legitimate testing function intended mainly for developers. Other apps can receive those simulated coordinates, and they may also be able to identify them as mock locations.

That created a different problem.

I wanted to browse profiles in Lisbon. I did not want Maps to think I was already there. I still needed the real weather, the correct airport directions, and normal location sharing with the person expecting my arrival.

Using a system-wide location tool would also mean enabling developer settings and giving another app access to one of the most sensitive functions on the phone. Even if it worked, I would have to remember to disable it before using navigation or checking in somewhere.

A VPN had changed too little to move the dating profile. GPS spoofing threatened to change too much.

That left the control I should have checked first: the dating app’s own location setting.

Tinder offers Passport Mode, which lets users choose another city. Bumble’s Travel Mode allows subscribers to select a destination for a limited period and marks the profile as travelling. Hinge allows users to edit their profile location on a map.

I opened the profile editor, moved the location marker to Lisbon, and returned to discovery.

The feed changed immediately.

That was the first result that actually solved my problem. I could see people near the place I was going, and the conversation waiting in my inbox now made sense in the right local context.

The lesson was not that VPNs were useless. It was that I had assigned the VPN the wrong job.

What I still needed the VPN to do

The dating app’s location control determined whom I could discover. The VPN still determined how my traffic left the phone.

That mattered because the next day I would be moving between airport Wi-Fi, mobile data, and a hotel network. The dating platform could still see my public IP address, while advertising and analytics systems inside other apps continued making their own background connections.

Location data does not remain neatly inside a single app. In January 2025, the US Federal Trade Commission finalized an order restricting Gravy Analytics and Venntel from selling sensitive location data. Reporting around a related breach showed how advertising systems embedded across many apps could feed a much larger location-data market, sometimes beyond what users—or even app developers—clearly understood.

A VPN cannot erase coordinates that a user has deliberately shared with a dating platform. That part belongs in the phone’s permission settings and the dating app itself. But it can hide the original public IP address from the local network, protect traffic on unfamiliar Wi-Fi, and reduce some unnecessary advertising and tracking connections.

Once I separated those responsibilities, choosing a VPN became easier.

I no longer needed the service with the longest country list. I needed one that was quick to start, made sense on changing travel networks, and did not turn a simple connection into another round of server testing.

That was when I tried OnlydogVPN.

The smaller app did not begin by asking me to choose from a wall of countries. It presented situation-based options, so I selected the connection appropriate for travel and continued.

That change in interface was more useful than it sounds. I had already wasted time believing that the right city flag would move my dating profile. Another server map would have encouraged me to repeat the same mistake. This app treated the network condition as the problem rather than pretending that every task began with geography.

It also let me begin without creating a conventional email-and-password account. I did not have to add another login to an evening already involving a dating profile, flight details, and hotel messages.

I opened the dating app again and replied to the conversation.

The message sent. The Lisbon feed stayed in place because I had changed it through the dating app, while the VPN protected the connection underneath it. One setting controlled the profile’s discovery area. The other controlled the network route.

That was the arrangement I had wanted from the beginning; I had simply been trying to achieve both parts with one switch.

After sending the message, I moved from Wi-Fi to mobile data while walking outside. The connection recovered without requiring me to choose another server or repeat the login process. That smaller moment mattered because travel connections rarely fail at convenient times. They disappear near boarding gates, inside lifts, or just as a message is being sent.

The service uses HTTP/3-based transport with additional obfuscation and is designed to recover on weak or changing networks. The app does not expose the dating platform’s internal filtering rules, so I could not observe how the platform weighed every signal. What I could observe was simpler: the conversation continued while the phone changed networks.

Only afterward did I notice the blocked-request counter. It showed that the service had stopped a number of advertising and tracking requests while I used the phone. That did not change my dating location, and it did not conceal information I had intentionally given to the dating app. It addressed a smaller problem that appeared after the main one was solved: background requests unrelated to the conversation I was trying to have.

The limitation is straightforward. The service has fewer server locations, fewer independent ratings, and a shorter public history than the established provider I tried first. Someone who needs a particular exit country every day may prefer the larger network.

But a larger network had not solved this situation.
