How I Kept Social Media Working During a Block in Turkey

My sister’s live location stopped updating halfway across Istanbul.

She was trying to reach me near a metro station where several surrounding roads had been closed. WhatsApp still showed her last location, but it was twelve minutes old. My messages sat beside a single grey tick. When I opened Instagram to check local updates, the feed displayed a few cached posts and then stopped loading.

I blamed the crowd.

Mobile networks often struggle when thousands of people gather in one area, so I switched airplane mode on and off. An ordinary news website loaded immediately. My email refreshed. WhatsApp did not.

I walked into a café and joined its Wi-Fi. The same message remained undelivered.

Two separate connections could reach the wider internet, yet the same social and messaging services were failing. That made the next step clearer: I did not need another speed test or another phone restart. I needed a route that could carry one message before my sister chose the wrong exit.

The important word is throttling.

A platform does not have to disappear completely. The connection can be slowed until the app becomes practically useless. A feed opens but does not refresh. Text waits while images stall. A call rings without connecting.

OONI’s measurements from Turkey found unusually long connection-establishment times for social media services while other sites using related infrastructure remained reachable. The pattern pointed to targeted interference rather than ordinary congestion.

From the user’s side, however, it simply feels as though the phone is misbehaving. That explains why my first actions had been so predictable: restart the connection, change networks and reopen the app.

Once those failed, the distinction mattered. The internet was still working. The route to the apps I needed was not.

My usual VPN connected without solving the problem

I already had a subscription to a large VPN provider.

It had years of public history, a substantial support operation and servers in more countries than I would ever visit. Under normal conditions, those were reassuring strengths.

I opened the app and chose the nearest recommended location.

The status changed to “connected.” I returned to WhatsApp and sent another message.

Nothing happened.

Instagram loaded one additional image and stopped again. I changed countries, tried the automatic option and opened the protocol menu. Each choice looked reasonable, but none was tied to the problem in front of me.

I was not trying to appear in a particular country. I was trying to make a restricted connection usable.

The provider’s large server map gave me more routes to test, but no clear reason to choose one over another. Every failed attempt sent me back to the same menu while my sister’s location became older.

That was when my comparison standard changed. During a block, hundreds of possible routes matter less than one route designed for the conditions already happening.

The smaller app started with the situation

Encryption protects the contents of a connection. It does not necessarily hide the connection’s traffic pattern.

That is why a conventional VPN can display a successful tunnel while the apps inside it remain slow or unreachable. The network does not need to read a message to interfere with the route carrying it.

OnlydogVPN uses HTTP/3-based transport with additional traffic obfuscation. I could not observe which internal filtering rule affected the failed routes, but the restrictive-network preset restored the messages, location updates and call that had stalled before.

That was enough explanation for the moment.

The connection had to survive leaving the café

Once I knew my sister was heading toward the correct exit, I left the café and started walking to meet her.

The Wi-Fi weakened at the door. My phone moved back to mobile data. The call paused briefly, then continued without sending me back to a server list.

That detail supports a practical rule: when several social apps fail across more than one connection while ordinary websites still open, stop treating the phone as the main suspect.

A short diagnostic sequence worked better for me.

First, I opened an ordinary website. Because it loaded, I knew the underlying internet had not disappeared.

Second, I checked more than one affected service. WhatsApp and Instagram were both struggling, which made a single-app outage less likely.

Third, I changed from mobile data to Wi-Fi. When the same services still failed, I stopped blaming one operator.

Then I changed the route with the restrictive-network preset.

The process required no detailed knowledge of filtering systems. It only required recognising the difference between selective interference and a complete internet outage.

The worst time to install a VPN is after the block begins

After that evening, I simplified my preparation.

The app stays installed and updated on my phone. Before a major event, journey or politically sensitive day, I open the restrictive-network preset once on Wi-Fi and once on mobile data.

That removes several points of failure. I do not have to search an app store while access is already degraded. I do not need to create an account through email that may be loading slowly. I do not have to guess among countries and protocols while an urgent message is waiting.

I also keep essential information outside social platforms: phone numbers, addresses, meeting points and a basic family contact plan.

The logic is straightforward.

When ordinary sites work but several social apps stall together, I use the restrictive-network route.

When browsers, maps and other internet services all fail, I look for another underlying connection instead of endlessly changing VPN servers.

When the phone moves between Wi-Fi and mobile data, I give the connection a moment to recover before starting over.

This turns a stressful situation into a short sequence of decisions.

The second device did not create another login problem

After meeting my sister, I needed to send a longer update from my laptop.

Normally, moving a VPN to another device means finding a password, opening email and approving another login. Starting a second account process while dealing with restricted services would have created a new problem immediately after solving the first one.

The verification-code sharing system let me extend access to the laptop without another conventional login chain.

My phone continued handling live messages while the laptop handled the longer update and attached files. I did not repeat the server selection or wait for a confirmation email.

This was not the feature that restored social media access. It solved the smaller friction that appeared next.

On the phone, the app had been an emergency route. Once the same connection moved easily to the laptop, it became part of a usable working setup.

Access does not remove responsibility

Turkey’s Constitutional Court has recognised the importance of internet and social media platforms for receiving and sharing information. It has also examined broad platform restrictions through constitutional protections for freedom of expression.

Technical access does not change the legal nature of what a person publishes. Users remain responsible for their content, local law and any security policies imposed by an employer.

My purpose was simple: locate a family member, share route information and keep a call connected.

The VPN did not change the communication. It allowed a working internet connection to carry it again.

The right comparison was time to delivery

Before that evening, I compared VPNs through familiar numbers: countries, servers and advertised speed.

During a social media restriction, those numbers moved into the background.
